Food product selection

Non-destructive X-ray analysis is most widely used by the food industry for foreign body detection and checking of the correct filling of packages at the end of the process.

The penetrating ability of X-rays is necessary in the former case to be able to identify randomly introduced foreign parts, for example tiny fragments of glass or metal inside the product once it is packaged, or bone flakes in meat or bones in fish; in the second case to being able to see inside non-transparent containers, whether either aluminum, plastic or glass.

Another application area is the assessment of the freshness of a food product, even a bulk one: spectroscopic X-ray investigation analysis can provide an objective indication of the health status of perishable foods, such as fruit and vegetables.Â
